I love a local cookery course and have done so in Italy, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia. The Tamarind Cookery School in Luang Prabang excelled themselves and gave you a great taste of Laos. Excellent customer service from start to finish.
The course lasts around 6 hours. You are taken to the local market, Phousi, (which is amazing especially for people watching, street photography and good quality cheap goods) and learn about the local ingredients. As you can see, rat is a local delicacy but not included in your recipes! Then, you move onto an exquisite location for the course itself. Sit was our guide and teacher – he was amazing, excellent English among other languages and good jokes too!
You are shown the recipes and process first, then return to your bench to prepare with help from Sit. You cook over open coals with help again from Sit and the team. Our recipes included fish steamed in banana leaf/lemongrass stuffed chicken/buffalo salad/locals dips / sticky rice. The groups are no larger than 12 people. You then enjoy your fayre and eat together.
A bargain at less than £25 per person.
