High dynamic range imaging (HDRI or HDR) is a technique used to reproduce a greater dynamic range of light that isn’t possible using standard photographic techniques. HDR images can represent a more accurate range of intensity levels found in scenes – more in line with what the human eye can see.

Why did I start experimenting with HDR? I kept coming across these amazing images on Flickr & thought ‘how are people taking these images?’

A little research on google and I was on a mission.  I have contacted a number of Flickr members to ask for advise on different photography techniques and they are always happy to share information in my experience.

In basic terms, HDR is taking a number of shots, in, over & under exposed and merging them into one. I am still learning & experimenting what works best in different situations and have been delighted with some of my results.  I find it easiest to shoot in manual mode, use bracketing to take my shots, shooting in continuous high mode if not using a tripod (a steady hand is preferable for HDR as the images are aligned when merged).  I use Photomatix software to merge my images, then exporting back into my Lightroom catalogue.
