There is lots more to food and drink in Kuala Lumpur, KL, but these are just a few tips from my short visit travelling with a camera.
Cafe Old Market Square
A national institution, this cafe first opened its doors in 1928 and is now a heritage site. The locals stream in here, however, tourists are also made very welcome. Visit here for amazing local food, the Nasi Lemak was the best I have tasted. Lovely that it is still kept how it was all those years ago when it was restored. Even Boris Johnson has visited here!
Sunset drinks at Heli Lounge Bar
Visit the disused helipad for drinks and watch the sun go down. Amazing views of the city changing from day to night. Arrive early for a seat, it gets busy. You can find it on top of Menara KH in Bukit Bintang.
KL’s largest open air street food area. Amazing food from Malay, to Chinese to Thai. Dim sum to fish to BBQ, you name it, the list goes on. All served to your plastic chairs and tables set up along the street. It gets very busy and the stall owners will try to gain your business. Even if you don’t want to eat here, stroll down for the atmosphere.
Visit Christina and her team at Sarang Cookery for an excellent culinary experience. You will learn more about the Peranakan culture and history along with how to cook their wonderful tasty food. Iis was an amazing teacher. She showed us how to cook the dishes first, then we cooked all 4 ourselves. You can take them home or eat them in the restaurant which you must visit also. Yum!
Bukit Bintang
Bukit Bintang is well know for it’s nightlife, however there are a large array of restaurants to chose from in this large entertainment area.
Alcohol is heavily taxed in Malaysia, one if the highest in the world. Langkawi is the exception which is tax free. So going out for a few drinks will set you back in the wallet department.
