Red Kites

Milvus Milvus – the Red Kite is a bird of prey from the Accipitridae family. They are unmistakable in the sky – so graceful with their reddy brown bodies and beautiful wing and tail feathers.

The kites were saved from national extinction following a protection programme and have now been successfully reintroduced in the United Kingdom.

My shots were taken at the Gigrin Farm Kite Feeding station in Rhayader, Mid Wales.  The kites are fed every afternoon and you will enjoy the spectacular sight of hundreds of birds circling and swooping down to collect their food.  There are specialist photographic hides available, I would suggest pre booking as the day I visited, they were full.  Click here to find out more details about the kites and Gigrin Farm.

Whilst in the vicinity, make sure you visit the reservoirs – you can find our more information on the area on the Elan Valley website.
