St Lucia boasts mountains, rainforest, waterfalls, beaches, fishing villages, history and a lot of beauty. But one of the most spectacular sites is the dramatically tapered mountains called ‘The Pitons’.

So, it was off on a catamaran along the coast for me. First stop was in the beautiful Marigot Bay. American novelist James A Michener described the bay as “The most beautiful bay in the Caribbean.” It is also a historic landmark – it was the site of a number of battles between the French and British navies. Also, the 1967 film ‘Dr Doolittle’ filmed scenes here; the Great Pink Sea Snail and construction of the harness for the Giant Lunar Moth.

Then a cruise along the coast to the World Heritage Site, The Pitons which were created less than a million years ago. Aptly named ‘Gros Piton” (770m) & ‘Petit Piton’ (743m), they are 2 mountainous volcanic plugs & are linked by the Piton Mitan ridge. Coral reefs cover just under 60% of the site’s marine area & has a plethora of flora & fauna, some rare & some endemic. A great way to while away a few hours and enjoy the trip back up the coast with a few local rum punch – cheers!

Pulling out of port, the rain came & produced a wonderful rainbow & sky colours. A great ending to a great day in St Lucia.
