Whiteford Point Lighthouse is located off the coast at Whiteford Point near Whiteford Sands on the Gower Peninsula, Wales, Great Britain.

The wonderful and varied landscape of the Gower Peninsula (Welsh: Penrhyn Gwyr) was the first place in Britain to be designated as an ‘area of outstanding beauty’ (AONB) by the Countryside Agency on behalf of the UK government.  There are only 5 in Wales.

The lighthouse is quite unique, made of cast-iron and built in 1865, a design by John Bowen of Llanelli.  It is the only wave-swept cast iron tower of this size in Great Britain. It is 44 feet (13 m) high and stands just above low-water level. Sadly, the lighthouse is no longer in operation.

The first known cast-iron British lighthouse was in Swansea Harbour, Wales and was built in 1803.

A brilliant structure to photograph, however, check the tide times before you visit, at low tide it is accessible.  However, do your research well or seek advice before attempting the walk as it can be treacherous, but well worth it and try shooting subjects at different angles!
