Southend-on-Sea is a seaside town in Essex, England. It sits on the Thames estuary, 40 miles east of the city of London. Southend is home to the longest leisure pier in the world. The pier is a grade II listed building and extends 1.3 miles into the estuary. Sir John Betjeman said that “the pier is Southend, Southend is the pier“.
This weekend saw my first visit to Southend, and, I loved it! Arriving late afternoon and picked up by a friend who lives in the area, we drove down the seafront. As usual, the trusty Nikon was in tow! The sun was just coming down and I couldn’t wait for the car to come to a halt so I could jump out & shoot. The sky and sundown was just perfect.
Southend has an amazing history and is well worth a visit, especially at sundown!
