My first visit to Laos & I am enthralled.
It is one of the most tranquil capital cities I have visited, San Marino is the only other to match the chilled out atmosphere. A very safe and clean city, with accommodation and restaurants to suit every budget. The Laos people are very welcoming and love it when you speak a few words in Laotian to them. English and French are also widely spoken.
A city of many Wats which have the most wonderful & intricate adornments. Most are free to enter – or a less than £1 to visit Haw Pha Kaew & Wat Si Saket. Please observe the rules which are shown for tourists – remove your shoes / adhere to the dress code (shoulders covered / trousers/skirt below the knee / don’t point your feet towards the Buddha).
One of my ‘must do’ during any stopover is visiting the local market for a spot of people watching and street photography. I certainly wasn’t disappointed in Vientiane. As a visitor I was made to feel very welcome – khàwp ja̖i lãi lã (thank you very much).
